I just finished reading "Checkmate Part 3'. Anyone who enjoyed the first two parts will not be let down. There's plenty of turmoil and chaos on the Bangalla/Uganda frontlines with more villians than a Spiderman movie.
The narrative and illustrations are excellant.
Ed Rhoades 'Behind The Mask' column on terrorism in the Phantom's universe was insightful.

NO!!! WHY on earth you compare Eastern Dark/Bababu wid classic like Vultures/Hydra??? Even the very first of those Eastern/Bababu was not that thrilling to make a return,speciaslly Bababu became a joke in the later strips!!!!

But,Vultures/Singhbrotherhood/Hydra are worth to return n create new series.....why Falk didn't that's unknown but definetly worth a try,even now!

Thanks mate. Probably a little old for a Library but knowing the Wagga Library I may just check it out, who knows what you may find there. I will be definitely trying to buy them as well though.

Geaghs, 'The Hydra Monster' is # 8 in the Avon Phantom series, (don't know how the 'cool smiley' got onto my original response).
The Avon series was published from 1972 - 1975, so I would guess most copies would be in the hands of collectors, enthusiasts or traders these days, as opposed to libraries. I hope I'm wrong - it would be great to see these novels on library shelves.

Here's something else to think about, some time in the mid 1600's the calendar was changed from (or to, I don't remember offhand which) the Gregorian system where-by we lost or gain about a week (again I don't remember offhand) this little item has been the bane of genealogists who use church records of that era.

I agree with Ivan here. Dates in the comic are very flexible anyway, how many times have the dates and events of previous Phantoms been changed? Even by Falk. Especially by Falk.

To me, the Phantom line has been around for just over 400 years as of the date of the last story.

Mike Bullock stated on the Phorum recently, that starting with Phantom # 26, their new cover artist will be Joe Corroney, who did the cover for Phantom # 18.
His cover work appears to be as proportionally impressive as Doug Klauba's - still Moonstone's finest cover artist by far.

Surely your not saying that you prefer Jim's current Frew covers are you??? Personally I can't say that I'm a huge fan of the bulging muscles displayed in that Moonstone cover but I'd still be way more tempted to pick up that comic than one that has a badly photoshopped/coloured panel like the recent Frew issues....... if only we could get Egmont standard covers on Frew's then I'd be happy.

I don't mind the current covers from Frew, but they could do better I admit. The thing is though the front cover usually depicts the artwork inside, and I wouldn't bother with what I think is simply another roid boy comic from a pulp mill of publishing.

I like the fact that the Phantom comic has always been simple and not over drawn and doesn't have him all pumped up and bulging out everywhere, and he looks like a normal person. That has always been an appealing aspect for me.

Also he doesn't look plastic and on that cover, he was simply another plastic super hero on roids, and we already have enough of them.

But that is just my thoughts and others may think different.

I personally wished to see a return of "V" but that didn't happe,,,well,at lst there's one Egmont creatn on V but the original falk-creatn was a master-piece!!!

Btwn,bringing a new gang/enemy is always thrilling that Falk served for years,but bringing back some special enemies is always fascinating!!!

P.S.- Falk did this returns in his other strip,Mandrake where we see retrns of dreaded crime-organisatn like "8" ,or return of evil: Cobra or more fascianting,,return of Clay Camel - the Masater of Disguise,,,,and those were majot hits,then I wonder why Falk didn't the same in GWW's strips!!!

Timpa - Just to move away from all the other cricket stuff at the moment but with you being located in India (well according to your profile anyway) what is the reaction towards the IPL over ther been like. Are the fans really all behind it as we get told in the media over here or are they starting to get sick & tired of 20/20. At the moment I think I have seen enough of it to last me a while.

And don't worry we turn on our sportstars over here just as quick as we turn on everybody elses. We just don't like to tell the rest of the world about it.

In an 1990 interview Falk himself admitted that,when he'd started writing the Mandrake/Phantom way back in '30s,he was looking for merely a short perios & it was nowhere in his mind that they will survive more than 50 years!!!

Yes the birthdate of the 21st Phantom may have moved up to allow for him to remain a young man as opposed to someone who was nearing 100, but it doesn't change the fact that the original Phantom, AKA the Avenger, started back in 1525, and that means it was nearly 500 years ago, or for those that want to be picky, over 400 years ago..

This I agree with but it also gets complicated. The Phantom does tell Diana it happened 411 years ago. By todays date this means it happened in 1597 (more likely 1585 if you accept that the phantom has aged 10-12 years since this conversation).

So within four panels we have two dates which after all this time now contradict each other. Anybody else get the feeling that maybe Falk wasn't thinking the character ws going to hang around for this long?

The Indian cricket board have made a great decision and finally banned the serial pest. He has been put out for five ODI games for striking Sreesanth and told that if he commits anymore offences he will be banned for life. Although I do not agree with the latter part of the sentence - as a year or two would suffice, rather than life - it is about time the Indians woke up to the poor behaviour that he has now displayed over nearly 10 years.

Part of the charm during Falk's first 40 years (at least) was that he rarely had to bring back villains/crime gangs etc. If we had have seen the constant return of thugs then Falk's creation may well have been less than what it has been - as can be seen by the constant return of sometime less than adequate characters in Egmont stories. I am extremely glad that Falk had the ability to continue to look at the world around him and continue to create original characters and storylines, whereas Egmont has several writers who together struggle to get anywhere near his abilities.

In my mind "nearly" aint quite good enough.

If you go around being happy that your team "nearly" won, then you must be happy with mediocrity. I would rather say my team got "over" the line and won!!

Well if that is how they want to sell the Phantom then it loses me before I even bother to look inside. I'm glad to hear that it is not the normal comic style, but still it is off putting to someone like me. The cover is what grabs you first, and that cover would not even grab me let alone make me want to even bother to look at the comic in general.

germ, they have since posted the cover PCS displayed over at the Moonstone website.
Phantomrabbitoh: I agree about the cover.
Believe me, that's where the steroids end. Inside are the fine illistrations of a great Phantom artist, Silvestre Szilagyi. It's long been a puzzling mystery to Moonstone Phantom supporters, why the covers are so unlike the interior artwork - espessially over the past two years or so when Mike Bullock took over writing duties and Sil came aboard as illustrator.
The general consensus seems to be 'store-shelf display competition' from DC/Marvel etc. - where all heroes/heroines are built like grimacing, stealth army tanks.

If that is what they are bringing out I am glad that I don't read that version. He looks like a bag of walnuts stuffinside a purple bag and pumped full of steriods. I can't read that, it is too gimicky for me. I would expect that from more parady style of comics, not from a regular Phantom comic, but that is just me.

This "sounds" like you don't want to listen!!

It is correct that back in 1936 it started in 1525, but today it started 72 years later, everything need to moove with the Phantom!

Back in 1936 the Phantom was born in 1911, in 1990 in 1965, and so on! Today he is a bit more mature than in 1936, and I can suggest a birthday around 1970!!

Should not be to hard to unederstand??
