Seriously, you might be right about this. It might not bode too well for the show's possibility of success for all I know. I also wonder if it airing in June could make the ratings lower. Over here in Norway, nobody watches TV during summer, I doubt that's the case with the US as well where the weather is better all through the year but you never know.

Never heard about Wrong Turn 2 (though your post makes it sound very interesting for its unusual way of finding success alone), but I know that TV-shows like Prison Break (which I never saw) have had to throw in the towel because people download episodes rather than watch them on TV. (You might be able to tell that I am not fond of organized online piracy)

You know man, I really do like your optimism. I see the whole "not available for download" as a problem - - as in no one cared enough to steal it.

Sometimes bootlegging does work positively for a product - - it did so for Wrong Turn 2. That movie was leaked, downloaded a whole bunch; but it was a bad quality. It drove DVD sales of that movie through the roof.

I really like Don Newton's work on The Phantom. I think his eerie style creates a mood not unlike the art of Ray Moore, but more modern. The Mystery of the Mali Ibex is a hoot if you like Bogart movies. Someone even says they're going to check out the "High Sierra". And, in addition to the Sydney Greenstreet-like villain, his henchmen resemble Peter Lorre and Tom Fadden from "The Big Sleep".

Out of all the artists on the Gold Key/King/Charlton series, my favorites are Don NEwton, Frank Bolle and -my absolute favorite- Bill Lignante.

Sheesh...Savarna doesn't allow for much 'grief' time when she wants something...
Parts of this daily - where the Phantom's grieves at the apparent loss of Diana, reminds me of the fairly lengthy section in 'Phantom Goes To War', where the GWW's believes Diana was incinerated on impact in a plane crash with Byron, as a result he can hardly bring himself to face tasks at hand.

Thanks Germ for providing Tony's working titles!

Personally I would prefer that Tony always put the title into the story himself. Preferably in the first strip, or at least the first week, of the story.

I did say original! A working title is only that, it may never see print. To be the original title on a story it has to be printed for the actually story!

I live in the north part of Norway, and believe me, I havve never seen Frew, DC or Marvel in their native language in our stores. Still I have been reading all of them for periods of 10 year (not at once).

In earlier time they were just a phone call away, today it is even simpler. If you are interested in something, and like to have it, everything is possible!

I do not like Moonstone comics due to i don't like the newer art work and style. There COULD be many new Phantom readers who do like this type of comic but alas it is not me. I like the older comics in black and white and probably always will. Tried to read Marvel, DC etc but i just don't like their style either.

As to new readers who think this IS the only Phantom(Moonstone) hopefully they like it enough to pick up an original style [Phantom] and read that too.

As to your comment about where are we concering FREW comics with their new exciting stories etc. I believe FREW has gone a bit stale and i have been seeing too many reprints of old stories. Even to the point where the cover is the same cover as well. I am a collector and might have over 1200 Phantoms comics but the truth is if you look hard enough in Australia you can get any Frew from 1000+ upwards easy. Why bother reprinting the same stories that you could get 5 years ago when there is a whole heap of unpublished Scandinavian stories untranslated to show the Australian public. I want new stories not old ones. At least Moonstone were all new.

I am aware that Frew has been releasing new material for quite some time, as I have one and only one Frew comic from 1997 no 1172 "The Viking Castle Mystery" which I remember reading a different version of in the Sunday papers after Tony DePaul took over the comic strip.

It was pure luck that I found that Frew back issue in a box of old comics for $1.

So, my only options when hunting for Phantom comics locally are to buy new Moonstones, or pay for old DC's, Marvels, Gold Keys, Kings and Charltons.

I agree.

Nick Barrucci was pretty obnoxious in his interview where he talked about all the changes Dynamite was going to make to The Phantom. That whole conversation was both sad and laughable. You might enjoy the angry post I made about that:

I do feel that it is important that any version of The Phantom should remain true to Lee Falk's Phantom. That said, it is important also that new writers be given some leeway to keep moving things forward so the stories don't stagnate or degenerate into a boring, simple formula. Falk himself was never afraid to let the Phantom grow, to embrace the modern world in terms of topics and technology.

Sadly, since Falk is no more, we have to let others take a try at telling Phantom stories, or there will be no more stories to read. Personally, although I don't care for DC or Marvel's Phantoms and have found Moonstone to be hit-and-miss, I am a great fan of the 1960's and 1970's comics from Gold Key, King and Charlton. There are some weak stories sometimes, to be sure, but overall, I thought that run of the The Phantom was a very entertaining attempt to do Phantom stories in a monthly, comicbook format that was NOT reprints of old newspaper strips (such as Frew and Indrajal).

But my point was (if I had one) if you thought Moonstone's Phantoms were bad, you will probably HATE Dynamite's version. I've been a Lone Ranger fan since I was a little kid and I could not stomach Dynamite's weird, incoherent version. AND the comics were about 30% ads! And the ads were all for other Dynamite comics!! No amount of glossy paper could've kepte me from feeling ripped off.

When I want strenght and speed, and simple adventure I pick up an old Superman, when I want hard boiled crim fighting, perhaps I pick up a more resent Batman. I even may want to pick up a Marvel if I feel like reading a lot of "nothing"!!

But in a Phantom comic I like to read about the Phantom, what I don't want is a mix of everything else. As Trimmer said, Lee Falk's version can't be that bad as it has around for so long, so why the need for making something "new"?? Perhaps it would have worked if it was something new, and not a mix of Marvel. DC and other behind a Phantom mask!!

No offense, but I haven't seen anything out of Dynamite that I liked. I mean, I saw lots of properties in their stable which I used to enjoy, but I have to say that their take on The Lone Ranger was absolutely dreadful. I am very apprehensive about what they will do with The Phantom.

As to Moonstone, although I'm not a huge fan, I feel like they really tried. at first to keep things true to the history and feel of The Phantom. I love issues #3 and #4 and they're better than any of the issues DC or Marvel managed when it was their turn. But somewhere along the way, as the comic didn't sell, Moonstone tried new things.

What some of you members may not realize is this: The Phantom is actually pretty obscure in his home country (I mean the U.S.A., not Bangalla.) Newspaper comics are not read here like they used to be and the comicbook market is pretty flooded with superheroes. No matter how important The Phantom is or how long he's bee around, he's just NOT the household name he was 50 years ago. So, no matter how hard Moonstone tried, the market was stacked against them here.

Those Newton-pages are pretty great, on that blog.

But I must say... Although the story is very good at the start, the big continuity-differences in it are somewhat distracting. The Bandars, assaulted by slave traders?? How did they even get into the DEEP Woods, in the heart of Bengali??

Why didn't the many sentries that patrol the woods send warning? Why weren't all of the slavers killed in a quick & efficient ambush with the FEARED poison-arrows and darts that the Bandar possess?

The Bandar is feared and respected throughout the entire Jungle because of their skill with sneak attacks and poisoned weapons. The Slavers shouldn't have been able to come within a mile of the Bandar village.

And they don't know that the Phantom is the mortal Kit Walker... I'm not sure how Newton could miss this one, because as I recall it, they have known it in the comic since after the first couple of strips/adventures ( yes, it is true that in the Singh Pirates Falk writes it as if Guran and the other Bandar have no clue about the Phantoms mortality, but that soon changes.). And it was certainly clear that they knew who he was by the mid-70's, the time-period that I'm guessing this issue was produced in.

And of course, we know this isn't how the 20'th Phantom dies, and he certainly never had a wolf, like the 21st. ( which is the only Phantom to ever have such a pet)

Of course, the death and the wolf are more minor things I should say, since they can be nothing but artistic license by Newton and the writer, and as such they are ok, because they are a part of their take on the Phantom. But the depiction of the Bandar is somewhat annoying. :S

I was out of town, and away from my computer when the whole 'Moonstone stops publishing the Phantom in July' hit the fan.
I can only say I'm sorry. It's been said by many on this Phorum that after a rocky start things vastly improved - and their output over the last few years was remarkable!
Eight years gone like that.
I know we'll see up to GWW # 12, however, I hope we see the prose Chronicles Vol. 2 and as many 'Generations' editions as possible before the July deadline.

Well, I can't say I disagree with you. I did so look forward to Moonstone when they first announced their take on the Phantom.

Sadly, they flopped and prodused crap! Not to say they did not make one or two readable books, but that is not enough. We don't want a mix of "everything", we wnat the Phantom, even if it is by a newcomber on the marked.

OK, I can take an insult, and even get a "tissue" if I need one, and I have a nice day anyhow. But I can't understand why my "insults" end in banning and "a week off", when other do as they like round here, let the same goe for everyone, that would make my day!!

Don Newton is actually my favourite Phantom artist of all time. I love the way he uses shadow to emphasise the mysterious nature of the character. I also think that his depictions really show that the Phantom is just a man who relies more on his head then his brawn.

I've been lucky enough to acquire some original pages he did and what was printed in the Charlton issues doesn't do his work justice. I'd love to buy one of his covers one day but unless I win the lotto don't think it will be anytime soon.

Thats my 20 cents worth anyway.

The coloured version of the picture that you posted is surely rare;
as I said, it was the first time that I saw it...

I actually saw the comic-reader post from earlier in this thread, and I think I may have commented on it even. But still, I haven't seen the coloured version that I posted earlier, ever before.

So... what do you guys think? Can we figure out where it's from?

Meanwhile, while we give it some thougth, feast your eyes on these two little babies, so as to really get into the Don Newton mood:

yes, and that goes for everyone!! Remeber opinions are not facts, we can think what we want. On the other hand, we should all be prepared to be called "layers" or something like that if our "opinions" are very strange.
